The paper attributed the South Fork's higher sediment load at the confluence to an upstream concrete quarry. While the quarry may contribute, Lake Georgetown dams the North Fork and retains sediment during flood events — the South Fork has no such dam. This better explains the visible difference and invalidates the original conclusion.
